LAKELAND - With two doubles matches ending in 8-0 scores, and three singles matches also won without giving up a point, #16 Florida Southern easily defeated the University of Tampa 9-0 for its second win of the season.
The Moccasins (2-0) got their first two doubles points in shutout fashion from Nora Baertschi and Veronika Kovacikova at the number two flight, and Andrea Arguello and Amanda Carns at number three. The 17th-ranked team of Agnese Rozite and Senka Softic then picked up an 8-2 win at the top double flight to give the Mocs a 3-0 lead heading into singles.
The doubles win by Softic was the 50th of her career, making her the eighth player in team history to win 50 matches in both singles and doubles. She's the first to do that since Caroline Albertsma in 1993.
Once there, Arguello, Softic and Kovacikova made quick work of their opponents to secure the win. Rozite was also well on her way to a 6-0, 6-3 victory, and Carns and Baertschi also won in straight sets. That gave Florida Southern its second straight 9-0 win, the first time the Mocs have opened the season with consecutive shutouts since 1984.
Tampa fell to 0-2 with the loss.
Florida Southern's next match will be on Saturday at 1:00, when it hosts Palm Beach Atlantic.
