West Florida Spoils Mocs Debut As No. 1 Team In D-II

West Florida spoiled the Moccasin's first game as the top-ranked team in Division II with a 4-1 victory over the Moccasins Friday night at Henley Field. It was FSC's first loss in 12 games this season. The Argonauts improved to 10-5.

A three-run first inning gave West Florida all the runs it needed. Brandon Brewer and Jack Materne drew back-to-back walks off Moccasin starter Gus Schlosser (3-1) to start the game. With one out, Brewer stole third and came in to score on a Moccasin throwing error. Greg Pron followed with an RBI-single, scoring Materne. With two outs, Zach Cates doubled home Pron.

The Moccasins managed just two hits off Argonaut starter Jason Postill (2-2) through five innings before Kelvin Clark led off the Moccasin sixth with his fifth home run of the season. FSC then put two runners on with singles from Wade Kirkland and Andrew Grutka, but Postill retired the side without any further damage.

After a one-out single in the seventh by Colin Kaline, Zach North relieved Postill and got Trae Gore to hit into an inning-ending double play, then retired the Mocs in order in the eighth and ninth to earn his second save.

The two teams are scheduled to play a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday weather permitting.
