In a tail of two halves, the Moccasins come up short, 11-10, against Deep South Conference rival Catawba on Sunday afternoon at Bryant Stadium. With the win, Catawba improves 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the Deep South Conference, while the Mocs’ record drops to 2-4 overall and 1-2 Deep South Conference.
Catawba started the game scoring the first two goals one minute into the contest. The Mocs got on the board on a goal by Cam Holding with 10:56 left in the first, which cut the lead to 2-1. Catawba’s Braden Artem responded with a goal at the 9:45 mark, giving the Indians a 3-1 advantage. AJ Monteleone and Holding scored back-to-back goals tying the game 3-3 after the first quarter.
Seven seconds into the second quarter Brian Rossetti broke the tie scoring his first of two goals in the game. The Mocs went on to score four of the next five goals giving them an 8-4 lead with 3:26 remaining in the half. The Indians were able to cut the lead to 8-5 by halftime on an Artem goal.
Monteleone started the scoring in the second half with a goal at the 10:13, extending the Mocs lead 9-5. Catawba scored four unanswered goals to tie the game up 9-9 with 11:33 left in the fourth quarter. Corey Brown broke the tie on a pass from Jon Freda, give the Moccasins a 10-9 lead with 10:45 left in the game. Catawba Marty Tuohy tied the game up at 10-10 with 3:31 left. Tuohy then scored what would turn out to be the game winning goal with 2:04 left, giving Catawba the 11-10 lead.
Holding finished the game with three goals, while Brown, Monteleone, and Rossetti had two goals apiece. Freda ended up with three assist in the contest. John Mullaney when 11-19 on face-offs in the game.
The Moccasins return to action Sunday afternoon March 21 at 2 p.m. at Bryant Stadium against Southern New Hampshire University.Â
