LAKELAND - Postponed by rain on Friday, Florida Southern's match with Eckerd was re-scheduled for Monday and played under much better conditions. Though gusting wind was a factor for both teams, the Moccasins swept through doubles and won all six singles matches in straight sets to post a 9-0 win over the Tritons.
Monday's win was the fourth straight for Florida Southern (7-3, 1-2 Sunshine State Conference), which also improved to 5-0 on its home court. Three of those five wins have been by scores of 9-0, and the shutout was the Moccasins' fourth overall. The closest Eckerd came to scoring was at #3 doubles where Christian Lange and C.J. Johnson held off Aaron Kleefield and James Walker, 8-6.
It didn't take long for the Mocs to clinch the match after that, with Ben Taylor running away with a 6-1, 6-2 win at #6 singles and Michael Knoedler recording their fifth point with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Ben Maxwell at #1.
The Tritons (3-7, 0-2) came close to breaking up the shutout at #5 singles, but Guenther Fercher came away with a 7-6, 7-5 win over Jon Bonner.
Roman Schirmaier, Nicolas Bigler and Lange also picked up singles points for Florida Southern, which has little time to rest before its next match. The Moccasins will play at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday against South Carolina State in Orlando.
