Maggard's Walk-Off HR Gives Mocs A Split With Lions

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Moccasins' Zach Maggard led off the bottom of the seventh with a walk-off home run to give top-ranked FSC an 11-10 win in the second game of their Sunshine State Conference doubleheader Saturday at Henley Field. Saint Leo had won the first game 3-2.

Maggard€™s home run, his sixth of the season, was his second of the game and also his second walk-off home run of the season.

It came after the Moccasins rallied from an early 6-0 deficit, then gave up a 10-7 lead in the top of the seventh. Saint Leo had jumped on Moccasin starter Gus Schlosser for six runs in the first inning, but FSC kept chipping away and managed to take the lead with a four-run sixth inning.

Kyle Newton, who had entered the game in the fifth as a defensive replacement, hit his first home run of the season to tie the game at 7-7. Kelvin Clark broke the tie with a two-run single that scored Trae Gore and Colin Kaline, then Tyler Benzel singled home Clark.

The Moccasins (24-3, 4-2 in the SSC) sent closer Daniel Tillman to the mound in the top of the seventh, but he failed to retire a batter, giving up three hits, three runs, two walks and hitting a batter, and the Lions tied the game at 10-10. Patrick Szczerba replaced Tillman and got Jack Daru to hit into a force play at the plate and struck out Nick Gill. Ryan Wolfe came on to retire J.C. Suarez on a pop fly to Wade Kirkland at shortstop to end the inning, as the Lions left the bases loaded.

Ryan picked up his first win with Maggard€™s game-winning homer.

Saint Leo€™s Marshall Stalvey pitched a complete game in the Lions€™s 3-2 win in the opener. The Lions (14-15, 3-6 SSC) led 3-0 before the Moccasins scored twice in the seventh. FSC had baserunners in both the eighth and ninth, but couldn€™t score. Eddie Sipple suffered his first loss in six decisions.

FSC plays at Flagler Wednesday night at 7.
