Mocs On Wrong End Of Blowout

Box Score

The Moccasins got an indication of how the night was going to go when Tampa's Tyler Cox hit Max Russell's first pitch over the left field fence for a home run.

By the time the three-hour, 41 minute contest ended, the sixth-ranked Spartans had put 25 runs on the board and banged out 23 hits en route to a 25-6 victory Friday night at Tampa.

The win boosted Tampa's record to 40-8, 19-3 in the Sunshine State Conference, while the fourth-ranked Moccasins dropped their third straight game and slipped to 37-8, 12-4 in the SSC.

The 25 runs by Tampa are the most the Moccasins have allowed in a game since their 1995 season-opener, when they lost to Nova Southeastern 26-17. That 1995 Moccasin team went 51-10 and won the national championship.

Tampa scored at least two runs in every inning but the second. Russell had his shortest outing of the season, leaving after facing three batters in the fourth, and suffered his first loss after winning his first nine decisions.

The Moccasins had runners on base in every inning, but stranded 13 baserunners. They did collect 16 hits, led by a five-for-five performance by Kyle Gibbs. All five hits were singles and that's the most hits by a Moccasin in a game this season.

FSC and Tampa play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tampa.
