First Loss for the Mocs Comes in Texas

Box Score

COMMERCE, TX - On four previous occasions this year, Florida Southern found itself trailing in the second half, but came back to either win or tie the game each time. The Moccasins were in that position again on Sunday, but couldn't make it 5-for-5. Instead, Chelsey Haight scored her second goal of the match with 18:17 remaining to lift Texas A&M-Commerce to a 2-1 victory.

Florida Southern (5-1-1, ranked #12) trailed 1-0 at halftime and used a corner kick two minutes into the second half to tie the game. The kick by Alex Hoover resulted in a scarmble in front of the goal, and Emily Griffith came away with the ball. The junior midfielder hit a shot to the lower left corner of the goal to record her first goal of the season, only the second allowed by Texas A&M-Commerce in five games.

The Moccasins had three more shots saved before the Lions (4-1) re-gained the lead in the 72nd minute. Haight stole the ball from a Moccasin defender and hit a low crossing shot to the left corner that barely stood up for the rest of the day.

In the 76th minute, Kara Moore hit the crossbar for Florida Southern and another scoring chance was wiped out by a hand ball in front of the Lions' goal. Moore had another shot saved in the 82nd minute, the last taken by the Moccasins, who out-shot the Lions in the match, 13-11.

Both goalkeepers were tested with Randi Hafele making eight saves for Texas A&M-Commerce, and Martina Tangen Billing making six for Florida Southern. The game also featured six yellow cards, with three on each team.

Florida Southern returns to Florida and the Sunshine State Conference for its next game, traveling to Winter Park on Tuesday to take on Rollins College. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m.
