Mocs Fall to #4 Limestone

Limestone College has reached at least the semifinals of NCAA Division II Tournament in each of the past 11 seasons and Saturday the Saints showed why they are ranked fourth in the country.  Thirteen different players score at least one goal en route to a 19-7 win over the Moccasins.  The Moccasins’ record dropped to 2-2, while Limestone improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Mocs were forced into a defensive stand early. It took the Saints just over a minute to score the first goal of the contest as Riley Loewen scored.  Limestone tacked on four more goals to take a 5-0 lead after the first quarter. The Saints continued their offensive attack, scoring the first five goals of the second period giving them a 10-0 lead. The Moccasins got on the board as Corey Brown found Jon Freda cutting to the cage for the goal with 5:50 left in the first half. The Saints responded with four more goals to take a 14-1 lead into halftime.

The third quarter started much like the first two, with Limestone striking first and scoring the first three goals of the period. The Mocs got goals from Mat Thompson and Brown in the final three minutes of the third quarter to cut the lead to 17-3.

Brown scored his second goal of the game on a pass from Ike Hopper with 12:54 left in the fourth period. After the teams traded goals, Hopper’s shot found the back of the cage for goal.  Limestone’s Tommy Bryant scored the final goal for the Saints with 3:58 left. Chris Murphy was able to put a shot past the goalie for the 19-7 final.

Brown finished the game with two goals and two assists. Hopper added a goal and an assist. Chas LaDue went 18-30 on face offs for the game.

The Moccasins will return to action Wednesday night at Bryant Stadium when they take on Division III’s ninth-ranked team, Rochester Institute of Technology. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
