Mocs Win A Pair At Saint Leo To Sweep Series

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Moccasins roughed up Saint Leo pitchers for 19 runs and 26 hits en route to a doubleheader sweep, 10-8 and 9-3, Saturday at Saint Leo.

Now owning a nine-game winning streak, the 19th-ranked Moccasins are 16-5 overall, 3-0 in the Sunshine State Conference. Saint Leo fell to 9-16, 1-5 in the SSC.

In the first game, an RBI-single from Zach Maggard and a two-run single by Kyle Gibbs in the fourth broke a 1-1 tie and put FSC in front 4-1. The Moccasins tacked on two runs in each of the last three innings and they proved to be important, as Saint Leo rallied for two runs in the eighth and four in the ninth. Maggard had homered in the third to give the Moccasins a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Nate Carter relieved Jake Guengerich in the ninth after the Lions had scored four times and had two runners on base. Carter walked Ware Hart to load the bases, but then struck out Daniel Torres to end the game. Stephen Batman worked seven innings and picked up his third win of the season. Carter earned his first save.

The Moccasins had six players with two hits each. Maggard, Gibbs and Colin Kish each drove in two runs.

In the second game, Eddie Sipple tossed a seven-inning complete game to earn his third win of the season. Tony Mitchell homered twice in the game, connecting for solo shots in the second and sixth innings. Austin Chubb had three hits for the Moccasins. Mitchell, Kelvin Clark, Tyler Benzel and J.J. Downum each had two hits in the game. Mitchell and Jimmy Correnti each drove in a pair of runs.

The Moccasins play a single game Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Warner.
