Benzel's Blast Lifts Mocs to 14th Straight Win

LAKELAND -- Tyler Benzel hit a two-run homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to lift 14th ranked Florida Southern to a 5-3 win over #28 Barry in Sunshine State Conference baseball action Friday at Henley Field.

Florida Southern (21-5 and winners of 14 in a row) remains undefeated in the SSC at 7-0 while Barry (22-9) suffers its first league loss to fall to 9-1.

The Moccasins took a 1-0 lead in the second on the first of two solo homers by Mike Snyder in the game. Florida Southern added a second run in the third on consecutive singles by Colin Kish, Snyder and Tony Mitchell.

Barry scored tied the game with solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings, each coming on a sacrifice fly. The Buccaneers took the lead in the eighth on RBI single by Matt Petty.

Snyder clubbed his second homer to lead off the bottom of the eighth. His blast, his team-leading sixth, bounced off the roof a maintenance building in dead-away center field.

Gus Schlosser started on the mound for Florida Southern and retired the first nine in a row and then allowed just a walk an one hit thru five innings and finished with nine strikeouts. Patrick Szczerba pitched a perfect ninth inning while Jake Guengerich took the hill in the top of the 10th to pick up his third win against zero losses for the Mocs.

Manny Rodriguez worked 7.1 innings for Barry and and struck out 11 but was tagged for nine hits. T.J. Mullins (2-1) tossed the final two innings for the Buccaneers.

Snyder finished 3-for-5 for Florida Southern while Cory Jensen and Benzel each had a pair of hits.

The two teams complete their three-game SSC series with a 1 p.m. doubleheader Saturday at Henley Field.
