ALTAMONTE SPRINGS â€" With Agnese Rozite and Sabine Goge teaming up for a win at #1 doubles before going on to win their singles matches at the top two flights, 11th-ranked Florida Southern downed #20 Nova Southeastern 5-1 in the first round of the Sunshine State Conference Championships on Thursday.
Nova Southeastern (9-10) got an early point from its #3 doubles team, but it was all Florida Southern after that. The Moccasins (16-4) got an 8-3 win from Veronika Kovacikova and Joalis Dominguez at #2 doubles before Rozite and Goge won their match by the same score at the top doubles position.
Once singles play started, the Moccasins won the opening set in four of the six matches, and at that point needed only three of them to secure the outcome. Dominguez got one of them, and Rozite and Goge got the other two, leaving the remaining singles matches unfinished. For both Dominguez and Goge, it was their 15th straight singles win.
The win sends Florida Southern into the SSC semifinals where the Mocs will face top-seeded Lynn on Friday at 9:00 a.m. The Knights defeated Tampa, 5-0, and with Barry and Rollins also winning on Thursday, all four of the top seeded advanced to the conference semifinals.
