Sailfish top Mocs in 14 Innings

Florida Southern scored seven runs in the fourth inning, but it wasn'€™t enough as Palm Beach Atlantic got two late innings runs to defeat the Moccasins 9-8 in 14 innings Friday night at Henley Field. With the win Palm Beach improves its record to 23-14 while the Mocs fall to 24-9.

The Mocs, ranked 14th in Division II, got the scoring started in the second inning as Tony Mitchell tripled down the right field line. He would score on a Tyler Benzel RBI double to put the Mocs ahead 1-0.

In the top of the third Travis Murray reached base on an error and scored on a Yogi Gunther double to even the score 1-1. The Sailfish added two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to go ahead 3-1.

The Mocs responded in the bottom of the fourth inning with seven runs. Kelvin Clark was hit by the pitched, followed by Mike Snyder who walked. After a stolen base Mitchell hit an RBI single to left field to score Clark. Back-to-Back RBI singles by Benzel and Kish gave the Mocs a 4-3 lead. With two outs, Clark delivered a base-loaded single to right field to score two runs. Colin Kaline would score on a failed pickoff attempt at first base to give the Mocs an 8-3 lead.

The Sailfished scored two runs in the fifth and seventh inning to pull within one run. In the top of the ninth Ethan Perla walked with two outs, stole second base, and scored on a RBI single by Jorge Chavarria.

The score would remain tied until the top of the fourteenth inning when Perla walked to start the inning and stole second base. He advanced to third on a ground out and scored on a balk call.
Mitchell went 3-6 with an RBI and two runs scored. Benzel added four hits and two RBI's.

The two teams complete their three-game series with a doubleheader Saturday 1 p.m. at Henley Field.
