Box Score 1 Florida Southern battled back from four runs down twice to sweep the doubleheader from Palm Beach Atlantic 10-9 and 11-7, Saturday afternoon at Henley Field. Tony Mitchell hit a base loaded single in the bottom of the tenth inning in game one while Colin Kish delivered the game-winning RBI in game two.
The Moccasins, ranked fourteenth in division II, improve its record to 26-9, while Palm Beach falls to 23-15.
In the opening game, Palm Beach struck first in the top of the first inning as Jorge Chavarria tripled to right field and score on a Luis Mejia single to give the Sailfish a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the second the Mocs took advantage of a Sailfish error as Austin Chubb, Tyler Benzel, and Colin Kish scored to put the Mocs ahead 3-1.
Palm Beach scored four runs in the third inning and got back-to-back homeruns from Brooks Fleming and Taylor Kaprive in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 7-3.
In the bottom of the fourth, Zach Maggard lead off with a ground rule double, advance to third on a Chubb ground out, and scored on a Cory Jensen sacrifice fly.
After both teams traded runs in the fifth inning, Benzel hit a two-run homer to left field in the seventh to cut the lead to 8-7.
The Sailfish's Matt Civetti hit a homerun in the ninth to extend their lead to 9-7.
In the bottom of the ninth Maggard crushed a two-run shot to left field to tie the game 9-9. The homerun was the 32nd of Maggard's career and he is three behind the FSC career record of 35. The next inning the Mocs would load the bases for Mitchell who hit a single to center field to score Jensen for the 10-9 win.
Patrick Szczerba pitched two innings allowing one run to pick up his third win of the season. Clay Chapman and Nick Krolczyk combined for fiving inning of relief allowing one run.
It was a similar storyline in the nightcap as Palm Beach struck first scoring a run in each of the first two innings.
The Mocs got on the board in the bottom of the second as Benzel lead off with a double. Kish followed with an RBI triple to the gap in right field to cut the lead to 2-1.
Civetti hit a three-run homer to give the Sailfish a 5-1 lead in the third inning.
The Mocs responded scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth. After loading the bases, Jimmy Correnti hit an infield single and advance to second on a throwing error allowing two runs to score. Kaline hit a sacrifice fly to score A.J. Szatkowski and pull the Mocs within one run.
Florida Southern would tie the game in the bottom of the fifth on Benzel homerun, his seventh of the season.
Palm Beach regained the lead in the top of the sixth as Jordan Carter lead off the inning with a home run. Ethan Perla hit an infield single and scored on a Chavarria double to take a 7-5 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Szatkowski lead off reaching second base on an error. With one out, the Mocs loaded the bases with back-to-back walks by Kaline and Kelvin Clark. Mike Snyder hit a two-run double to center field, to tie the game 7-7. After intentional walking Benzel to load the bases Kish would draw a walk which allowed Clark to score to go ahead run. Maggard followed with a three-run triple to give the Mocs an 11-7 win.
Eddie Sipple improves his record to 6-3 after pitching six innings scattering nine hits and seven runs. Nate Carter pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the game.
Benzel finished the day 7-8 with 2 RBI's and six runs scored. Maggard had five RBI's on the day.
The Moccasins will be back in action next weekend with a three-game Sunshine State Conference series against rival Tampa. Friday's night single game starts at 7 p.m., with Saturday's doubleheader set for 1 p.m.
