Box Score 2 Adam Pendleton went a combined 4-for-6, with four RBI's and two doubles as 18th ranked Tampa swept a doubleheader from No. 12 Florida Southern Saturday at Henley Field. With the win Tampa improves to 29-14 and 13-8 in the Sunshine State Conference, while Florida Southern drops to 27-11 and 11-4 in the SSC.
In the opening game, Tampa broke a scoreless tie in the third as the Cody Davis singled, advance to third on a Pendleton double and scored on a Patrick Donahue groundout to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Tampa added two more runs in the top of fourth on an Andrew Jones homerun.
Florida Southern cut into the lead in the bottom of the fourth Colin Kaline walked, advanced to third a throwing error by the pitcher on a pickoff attempt, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelvin Clark.
After the Spartans scored four in the top half of the fifth, the Moccasins responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Colin Kish led off the inning with a walk, followed by a Zach Maggard single. Kish would score on a wild pitch. Austin Chubb hit an RBI single to right center to score Maggard. Corey Jensen hit an RBI double to score Chubb. Jensen would later score on a Clark groundout to cut the lead to 7-5.
The Spartans scored two runs in both the sixth and seven innings to extend their lead to 11-5.
In the bottom of the seventh, cut into the lead with a solo homer by Chubb, his fifth round-tripper of the season and his second of two hits he collected in the game for the 11-6 final.x
In game two, Florida Southern jumped on Tampa's starter Frank DeJiulio for three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Jensen walked to start the inning, followed by a single by Kaline, and a RBI double by Clark. Than Mike Snyder singled to left field which scored Kaline. Tony Mitchell hit a fielder choice to score Clark and give the Mocs a 3-0 advantage.
Tampa came back scoring five runs in the top of the third inning. Shawn Pleffner hit a bases loaded double, which scored two runs and cut the lead to 3-2. After a walked loaded the bases again, Davis hit an RBI single to tie the game 3-3. Then Pendleton hit a single to leftfield which scored two more runs.
The Mocs rallied in the fourth inning as Maggard reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Chubb double down the leftfield line. The Moccasins loaded the bases but were unable to push across the tying run.
After the Spartans scored one in the top of the seventh, Snyder hit a solo homerun to left field to lead off the bottom of the seventh for the 6-5 final.
Chubb led the Mocs with four hits and three RBI's on the day. Snyder went 3-6 with a homerun and a triple.
Florida Southern will be back in action next week when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale to take on Nova Southeastern in a three-game conference series. Thursday's single game will begin at 6 p.m., while Friday's doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m.
