Embry-Riddle Rides Early Points for 6-3 Win Over Moccasins

DAYTONA BEACH â€" Sabine Goge and Veronika Kovacikova each came from behind to win 3-set singles matches, and Joalis Dominguez also earned a singles point for the Moccasins, but after winning all three doubles matches, Embry-Riddle was able to hold on for a 6-3 win over Florida Southern.

The Eagles (16-3), who are ranked #2 in the country at the NAIA level, jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles before getting a 6-0, 6-0 win from Paola Montero at #6 singles, and a 6-3, 6-1 win from Caroline Nilsson at #5. That put Embry-Riddle up 5-0.

Dominguez then got Florida Southern on the board with her own straight set win, but a 6-2, 6-4 victory from Ekaterina Kamendova at #1 gave Embry-Riddle a 6-1 lead. Kamendova came into the match ranked #8 in the country as an individual.

The Moccasins (12-4) eventually got their final two points from the number two and three spots in the lineup, with Goge and Kovacikova joining Dominguez with wins over nationally ranked opponents from the Eagles. Kovacikova again played a marathon match for her part, eventually defeating Kristina Marova, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 10-3, while Goge improved her personal record to 15-1 with a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 win over Rocio Frej Vitalle.

Florida Southern will end the regular season this weekend with three regional matches in Pensacola. The first of those is Friday against Division II provisional member Lambuth (TN) at 4:00 eastern time.
