Mocs Defeat Lynn 3-2

Zach Maggard went 2-4, including a homerun, while Gus Schlosser had another solid outing to lift the sixteenth ranked Moccasins over Lynn University 3-2 in the opening game of their Sunshine State Conference series Saturday afternoon at McCusker Sportsplex.

With the win, Florida Southern improves to 22-8 overall and 8-2 in the SSC, while Lynn drops to 19-15 and 4-6 in the SSC.

Lynn struck first taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Richie McVey singled up the middle to start the inning. Followed by Dane Derstine, who was hit by the pitched. After a sacrifice bunt, Steven Fernandez doubled to left center to score two runs.

The Mocs got on the board in the top of the fourth. Colin Kaline led off and reached second base on an error. Kelvin Clark, playing his first game since March 8, followed with an RBI double to left center to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the top of the fifth inning, Maggard hit his sixth homerun of the season to right field to tie the game 2-2.

Maggard led off the eighth inning with a double down the left field line. He advanced to third on an Austin Chubb fly ball to right center. Then Cory Jensen hit a RBI double to the gap in right center to score Maggard and gave the Mocs the 3-2 advantage.

Schlosser pitched eight innings, scattering five hits and two runs while striking out eight to improve to 5-1 on the season. Jake Guengerich pitched the ninth inning for his third save of the season.

The two teams complete their three game-series with a doubleheader Sunday. Game time is slated for noon.
