Mocs Topple Lions 17-4

The Florida Southern lacrosse team came out strong and rolled past Saint Leo 17-4 Saturday night at University Field. The win was the most lopsided victory in program history. With the win the Moccasins improve to 7-6 overall and 4-2 in the Deep South Conference, while the Lions fall to 5-7 and 2-4 DSC.

The Moccasins struck first as Jon Freda found Mat Thompson for a goal, just over a minute into the contest.  Minutes later Thompson added another goal to give the Mocs a 2-0 lead. The Mocs added four more goals, including one from Spencer Parry, to lead 6-0 after the first quarter.

The hot shooting continued into the second quarter as Stephen Boyle found Kevin Naslonski for a goal 40 seconds into second quarter.  Then Boyle scored his first goal of the game to extend the lead to 8-0. The Moccasins put three more shots into the cage to take an 11-0 lead into the intermission.

The third quarter started much like the first two as Freda found Thompson cutting to the cage for a goal. Corey Brown added a goal at 9:14 mark, his second of the game.  Thompson added two more goals, before Evan Mills got the Lions on the scoreboard with 2:49 left. The Lions added two more goals to cut the lead to 15-3. The Mocs responded as Chris Murphy’s shot got past the goalie with three remaining.

The two teams traded goals in the fourth quarter for the 17-4 final.

The Moccasins defense was led by Andrew Almansberger who had 14 saves and four ground balls. He improved his record to 6-3. Brad Gysin, Larry Gress, and Parry combined for five caused turnover and shut out the Lions attack. Adam Ismaeil led the Moccasins picking up five groundballs.

The Moccasins outshot the Lions 39-29. Thompson had six goals and an assist, while Freda added a goal and four assist. Brown added two goals and two assist.

The Moccasins secured the top seed in the south region and a first round bye for the DSC tournament which begins Tuesday. The Moccasins will play the winner of the Saint Leo-Rollins game, Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Bryant Stadium.
