For five innings the Moccasins played second-ranked West Florida even at 1-1, but the Argonauts struck for six runs in the sixth and downed the Moccasins 7-2 Sunday at Henley Field to sweep the three-game weekend series.
The win was West Florida’s ninth straight, improving its record to 9-1. The Moccasins suffered their third straight loss and fell to 6-5.
Austin Chubb’s lead-off home run in the second, his third of the season, put the Moccasins in front. West Florida tied it in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Blake Barber.
The game stayed tied until the sixth when the Argonauts hit a pair of three-run homers. Pinch-hitter Dustin Saulmon hit the first pitch he saw from Moccasin starter Matt Fuglesang over the left field fence, then three batters later Leo Lemarche homered off Austin Jackson.
The Moccasins threatened to make a game of it in the bottom of the ninth. With two outs, pinch-hitter Keith Curcio doubled and Cory Jensen singled him home to make it 7-2. T.J. Kuban singled and Mike Snyder was intentionally walked to load the bases, but Kyle Jackson grounded out to second to end the game.
Kuban and Chubb each had two hits for the Moccains.
Jake Stephens worked six innings and picked up his second win for West Florida. Fugelsang took the loss to even his record at 1-1.
The Moccasins play three games in Valdosta, Ga., next weekend, taking on Delta State Friday, Valdosta State Saturday and West Florida Sunday.Â
