Mike Snyder hit his second home run of the season in the first inning, but that turned out to be the Moccasins' only run as they fell to #13 Delta State 16-1 Friday at Valdosta, Ga.
The game was close for six innings, with Delta State leading 4-1, but the Statesmen (7-0) broke the game open with 12 runs in the final three innings, including eight unearned runs in the ninth.
The loss was the Moccasins' fourth straight and dropped their record to 6-6.
Delta State's Ben Kingsley homered in the top of the first off Moccasin starter Jon Jones (1-1), but Snyder answered with his homer in the bottom of the inning to tie it. Sam Kidd put Delta State back in front with a two-run homer in the third and the Statesmen picked up a single run in the fifth.
Delta State added three more runs in the seventh and a single run in the eighth before a pair of two-out errors by the Moccasins in the ninth opened the gates for an eight-run inning. Brent Langston hit a grand slam homer on the first pitch after the second error and Kidd added a two-run shot for his second homer of the game.
Aaron Newcomb pitched the first eight innings and evened his record at 1-1. He scattered five hits, struck out seven and walked only one.
The Moccasins play Valdosta State Saturday at 7 p.m., then wrap up the trip with a 2:30 p.m. game Sunday against #1 West Florida.ÂÂ
