Fifth-Ranked Lynn Shuts Out Florida Southern

BOCA RATON - With two of the nation's top-10 doubles teams getting Lynn off to a good start, the 5th-ranked Knights went on to a 9-0 win over #23 Florida Southern on Friday afternoon in the first of the Moccasins' two weekend matches in south Florida.

The #4-ranked team of Amaury Van Haelen and Vlad Cirla started the day for Lynn (5-0, 3-0) with an 8-2 win at the top doubles flight, and the #8 team of Luca Pavanelli and Willi Wolfer won their match over Benoit Paradis and Carl Lundberg at the second flight, 8-5. That put the Knights ahead 3-0 in the match, and they went on to win all six singles points in straight sets.

One of those singles matches was a battle of ranked opponents in the number two position. Cirla, ranked #12 in Division II, won that one over 40th-ranked Ivan Marevic, 6-3, 6-1. Wolfer, who is ranked #5 in Division II singles, also won his match over Paradis, 6-2, 6-2, giving Lynn its fifth point of the day.

The closest singles match of the day came at number four where the Moccasins' Jorge Gutierrez fell to Van Haelen, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Florida Southern (0-6, 0-3) will play again Saturday afternoon at Palm Beach Atlantic. It will be the first time this year the Moccasins have faced a team not ranked in either the Division II top-10. or the NAIA national top-20.
