MIAMI SHORES - Playing its second nationally ranked team in less than 24 hours, #23 Florida Southern fell to #2 Barry 9-0, giving the Buccaneers a win in their 2012 season opener.
The Moccasins (0-2, 0-1 Sunshine State Conference) got off to a strong start Saturday only to see the Buccaneers pull out a pair of 8-6 wins at the top two doubles flights. The Mocs also started strong in singles play, as Ivan Marevic won his first set over Daniel Schmidt, 6-4, before Nathan Leavitt and Carl Lundberg dropped hard-fought 7-5 sets to their respective Barry opponents. From that point on, however, the day belong to the Buccaneers, who went on to take five of the six singles matches in straight sets.
Schmidt won his match at #2 singles over Marevic, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Florida Southern will continue its tough early-season schedule on Saturday, February 11, when the Mocs host #7 West Florida at 11:00 a.m.
