The Moccains and Saint Leo each got a strong pitching performance and as a result they split their Sunshine State Conference doubleheader Saturday at Henley Field.
The Moccasins won the first game, 5-2, behind Matt Fuglesang. Saint Leo got a complete-game two-hitter from Rick Teasley in the second game, as the Lions won, 4-1.
By winning two out of three, Saint Leo improved to 14-6 overall, 2-1 in the SSC. The Moccasins fell to 11-9, 3-3 in the SSC.
In the first game, Mike Snyder and Austin Chubb hit back-to-back homers in the first inning after T.J. Kuban had walked, giving Fuglesang all the runs he needed. Snyder doubled home a run in the third and Kyle Gibbs singled home a run in the eighth to complete the Moccasin scoring.
Fuglesang worked six innings, scattering six hits, and allowed just one run to boost his record to 3-1. Nate Carter worked the final 1.1 innings and earned his fifth save.ÂÂ
In the second game, the Lions capitalized on two FSC fielding miscues to score a pair of unearned runs in the first inning and that gave Teasley all the runs he needed.
The Moccasins got a run back in the bottom of the inning on Snyder’s second homer of the day, but they managed only one other hit, a fourth-inning single by Snyder, the rest of the game. Teasley struck out six and walked two, improving his record to 4-1. Clay Chapman, the Moccasin starter, took the loss to even his record at 1-1. Jake Guengerich pitched two scoreless innings, striking out three.
For the day Snyder went 4-7 with two home runs, a double and four RBI.ÂÂ
The Moccasins play Winona State (Minn.) Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Henley Field.
