Doubles Win Gives Mocs Good Start, but Auburn-Montgomery Wins Five Times in Singles for 7-2 Win

LAKELAND â€" Christie Nunnemann and Laura Wichmann got Florida Southern off to a good start in its match with the top-ranked NAIA team in the country Wednesday afternoon, but Auburn-Montgomery ran off the next seven points in the match to defeat the Moccasins 7-2.

Nunneman and Wichmann earned their second doubles win in a match against a top-five team for the second time this season as they defeated Morgane Zowczak and Hagar Caro, 8-3, to score the first point for Florida Southern (3-6, ranked #12 in Division II). Earlier this year, Nunneman and Wichmann pulled off a similar win against their doubles opponent from 4th-ranked Barry.

The Warhawks (12-0), who had also beaten Division II #10 Rollins 7-2 on Tuesday, followed the early doubles loss with two wins to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. One there, they used four of the nation’s top 16 individuals at the NAIA level to reel off five more wins before Crystal Copeland won at number six singles for the Moccasins, 3-6, 6-0, 10-8.

Joalis Dominguez also took her opponent to a third-set super tie-breaker before dropping her match at the number three position just before the end of Copeland’s.

Florida Southern will take on California (PA), ranked #11 in Division II, in its next match on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
