Mocs Come From Behind for 15-11 Win Over Wingate

The Moccasins scored six fourth quarter goals to cap the biggest comeback in program history, defeating Wingate 15-11 Wednesday night at Bryant Stadium.  The win marks the first time in program history that the Moccasins have defeated Wingate.

Florida Southern (2-4; 2-2 DSC) struck first, as Ricky DeMicco connected with Dane Sorensen for a goal to give the Mocs an early 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs responded two minutes later, as Derek Watts’ shot got past the goalie to tie the game 1-1. After the two teams traded goals, Jon Freda found Kevin Naslonski cutting towards the cage for his ninth goal of the season. Wingate scored back-to-back goals before DeMicco netted his fourth goal of the season to tie the game 4-4. The two teams traded goals one more time to even the score 5-5 after the first quarter.

Troy Press’s goal give Wingate (3-3; 2-2 DSC) a 6-5 lead with 14:32 left in the second period. The Moccasins responded 11 seconds later, as Soresen found Mat Thompson for a goal to even the score at 6-6. Wingate scored three unanswered goals to take a 9-6 lead at the half.

Watts got the scoring started in the second half with an unassisted goal to extend Wingate’s lead to 10-6. Corey Brown took advantage of a turnover deep in Bulldog territory and scored his second goal of the season.  Minutes later Larry Gress found Sorensen for his second goal of the game and cut the lead to 10-8. The Moccasins took advantage of another Bulldog turnover, as D.J. Lubs drove the length of the field to score the first goal of his college career and bring the Mocs within one goal after three quarters.

The momentum continued into the fourth quarter, as DeMicco scored an unassisted goal to tie the game at 10-10 with 12:44 remaining. Two minutes later Sorensen gave the Moccasins the lead, as he scored to complete his first career hat trick. It’s the first time since March 25, 2011, that a Mocs' freshman scored a hat trick in a conference game. The Mocs scored three unanswered goals, including two from Thompson, to extend the lead to 14-10. After a Wingate goal, Jon Freda scored an empty-net goal for the 15-11 final.

It’s the first time since March 6, 2009, that the Moccasins overcame a four-goal deficit to win a game. The Mocs trailed Grand Canyon 4-0 with 3:59 left in the first quarter in that contest, but went on to win 15-14.

The Moccasins outshot Wingate 41-24 in the game, while picking up 37 ground balls.

Andrew Almansberger made nine saves and picked up three ground balls in the game. Dan Krispinsky went 21-30 on  face-offs to improve his win percentage to .605 on the season.

The Mocs return to action Saturday when they host conference rival Catawba at 2 p.m. at Bryant Stadium.
