The 15th-ranked Moccasins finished the home portion of their inaugural season with a strong offensive showing Saturday at Bryant Stadium. Fourteen different players picked up at least one point, while Lindsay Holdway made nine saves in a 22-3 win over Newberry. With the win Florida Southern improved to 11-4, while Newberry fell to 2-9.
The Moccasins converted their first two shots into goals. Megan Asper connected with Caitlin Chase for the first goal, while Chase found Asper for the second one. Minutes later Chase found Alexa Caffrey in front of the cage for a goal to give the Mocs a 3-0 lead. Newberry got on the board on a Tessa Davis unassisted goal. Caffrey, Asper, and Maureen Cromer each netted a goal to extend the Mocs lead to 6-1. After a Wolves’ goal, the Mocs scored twice more to take an 8-2 lead at halftime.
The Moccasins offensive attack continued in the second half, as they outscored Newberry 14-1. Lorianne Hoover, Katie Ferree, and Kiani Carroll each netted a pair of goals in the second half. Six of Holdway’s nine saves came in the second half.
Every Moccasin goal was assisted, led by Chase, who scored twice and dished out a season-best six assists, while Ferree tallied two goals and five assists. Asper set a program-high, netting five goals, while picking up six draw controls. Hoover tallied two goals and four assists in the contest. Caffrey and Mara Mason were the only other players to tally at least three points.
Melissa Halstead and Taylor Perry contributed on both ends of the field, as each netted a goal and limited the Wolves opportunities. Florida Southern forced 24 turnovers in the game.
The Moccasins will wrap up their regular season Wednesday when they travel to Saint Leo to take on the Lions. Game time is 7 p.m.
