Record Run for Moore: Senior Midfielder Sets School Single-Game Mark for Assists in 6-0 Win Over West Georgia

Box Score

LAKELAND â€" Florida Southern’s offense awoke Tuesday in its final non-conference match of the year, and in the process, senior midfielder Kara Moore etched her name in the record book. With Moore picking up four assists, Kirra Rainbow scoring twice, and Kristy Legoas playing a part in three goals, the Moccasins downed West Georgia, 6-0.

The six goals were the most for Florida Southern since 6-0 wins over Thomas (GA) and Eckerd in 2008, and they were one short of the team record set in a 7-1 victory over Warner in 2006. Moore, a senior from Fleming Island, Florida, set an individual record with her four assists, breaking the previous mark of three which had been shared by five different players.

The Moccasins (3-9-3) scored three times in the first 8½ minutes, with Legoas (Palm Harbor, Fla.) assisting the first and third and scoring the middle one. Moore assisted two of those goals as well before tying the school record with her third on Caroline Evers’ goal in the 36th minute. That put Florida Southern ahead 4-0 at halftime and Rainbow (Melbourne Beach, Fla.) would score both of her goals in the first 11 minutes of the second half to provide the final margin.

Florida Southern’s first goal came from sophomore Sarah Goolsby (Richmond Hill, Ga.) just 4:25 into the match. It came on a cross from Legoas, who had initially received the ball from Moore. The ball from Legoas from right to center left Goolsby with an open net for her second goal of the season.

Less than three minutes later, Legoas was again on the receiving end of a pass from Moore, but this time took it directly into the box for a shot of her own and her second goal of 2013.

The Mocs’ next shot also resulted in a goal for Christine Knudstrup. The sophomore defender from Lakeland came forward on a corner kick taken by Legoas and connected on a header for her first goal of the season, giving Florida Southern firm control of the game. Knudstrup then started the Mocs’ scoring play with a ball played out of the back, sending it through Moore before Evers hit a 15-yard shot that gave the sophomore from Valrico her fourth goal.

Ranbow did the work herself in the 48th minute, dribbling downfield and sliding a shot under goalkeeper Mary Laza. She later dribbled around Laza in the 57th minute for her second goal of the night and third of the season. That was set up by the passing of Margot Chowansky (Califon, N.J.) and Moore, who exited the field not long after that with her new school record for assists.

The last Moccasin with three in one game was Alex Hoover in 2009, in a game at Eckerd.

Florida Southern out-shot West Georgia (2-11-1) 34-5, and might have scored more if not for the outstanding play of Laza, the Wolves’ senior goalkeeper. She finished with 16 saves, and defender Anna Leah Deese also stopped a shot during a quick 2-shot sequence by Sheila Ramos (Tampa, Fla.) late in the game.

Many of Laza’s saves came at close range, and there was one attempt by freshman Selene Nelson (Matawan, N.J.) that was hit with such velocity from outside the box that all she could do was get one hand on it to push it over the crossbar. Freshman Kellee Brown (Plant City, Fla.) tested her twice in the closing minutes too, while Emmalisa Zapfe (Cherry Hill, N.J.) pushed one just wide. Ramos was responsible for four of Laza’s saves alone, and Evers was a steady presence in the box as well.

The Mocs also hit the post once when Taylor Chitty (Columbus, IN) had a go at one from long range in the first half, and Jackie Metz (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Taylor Cox (Palm City, Fla.) each had shots that were a little high in the first 20 minutes of play. It was an active night too for Erin Phillips (Geneva, Fla.), who worked the field with her centering passes into the box that created several more chances for the Moccasins.

Junior Erin Moseley (Jacksonville, Fla.) and sophomore Lindsey Arsenault (North Yarmouth, Maine) split the shutout, but it was Arsenault who had to do the majority of the work. She accounted for all three Florida Southern saves, including a diving effort with one minute remaining when Cortney Emmert had a good look from the left side of the box. That pushed the ball wide of the net, and the Wolves were unable to generate anything on the corner kick when Arsenault scooped up a loose ball in the 6-yard box.

Gianna Conte (Orange Park, Fla.) and Brooke Williams (Brandon, Fla.) went all 90 minutes on the back line for the Moccasins, who picked up their fourth shutout of the season. Alyssa Abrahamsen (Highland, N.Y.) and Sydney Montgomery (Sanford, Fla.) each played over half the match on defense too, with the Mocs allowing only five shots.

Florida Southern returns to Sunshine State Conference play on Saturday when it hosts Lynn University in its home finale for 2013. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.
