Moccasins Open Home Schedule With Loss to No. 4 Barry

LAKELAND - Florida Southern opened the home portion of its 2013 Sunshine State Conference schedule here Sunday by falling 9-0 to fourth-ranked Barry at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center on the FSC campus.

The match was the 22nd-ranked Moccasins first home contest of the spring season as they had played their first five spring dual meets on the road.

With the setback, the Mocs fall to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the SSC, while Barry improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the SSC.

The Buccaneers opened Sunday's match by winning all three of the doubles matches as the Mocs scored just eight points.

Meanwhile, in singles play, the Mocs made the Bucs work in three of the six singles as the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 matches all had first set tiebreakers.

At the No. 2 spot, junior Benoit Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) forced BU's Renato Lombardi into a tiebreaker in the first set, but Lombardi would prevail 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) and then earn a 6-1 win in the second set. Junior Vladimir Barabash (Puhovka, Ukraine) forced a first set tiebreaker against BU's Leonel Vivas that Vivas won 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) and then collected a 6-4 win in the second set at the No. 4 spot, while sophomore Carl Lundberg (Stocksund, Sweden) took BU's No. 6 player Alejandro Alfonzo to a first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) and then fell 6-3 in the second set.

Moccasin sophomore No. 1 singles player Emanuel Lueber (Tiengen, Germany) fell to BU's Max Wimmer, 6-1, 6-4, while junior Nathan Leavitt (Bradenton, Fla.) dropped a hard-fought 6-2, 7-5 match to BU's Romain Costamagna at the No. 3 singles spot and junior Robbie Palmiotto (Boca Raton, Fla.) fell 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 singles spot to BU's Eduardo Alfonzo.

The Mocs will remain at home as they host No. 3 ranked Lynn on Friday, Feb. 22. The match is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
