DALLAS - Florida Southern second baseman Conor Szczerba picked up another Player of the Week honor on Wednesday afternoon as the junior was named the NCBWA Division II South Region Hitter of the Week.
It is the second Player of the Week honor for Sczcerba as he was selected as the Sunshine State Conference Baseball Player of the Week presented by VALIC on Monday following his outstanding performance in the Moccasins four victories last week.
Szczerba, who is a native of Titusville, Fla., earns the NCBWA South Region Hitter of the Week accolade after batting .562 with six RBIs and seven runs scored in leading the Mocs to four wins, including a three-game sweep over the weekend against North Alabama. He tallied multiple hits in all four games for the Mocs and recorded five extra-base hits. For the week, he hit two doubles and hit three home runs, including hitting two home runs in the series finale against UNA and recorded a 1.250 slugging percentage. In the Mocs 8-4 series finale win over the Lions, Szczerba went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and those two home runs and scored three times. The Polk State College transfer finished the week with a .600 on-base percentage, didn't commit an error in 21 fielding chances and had one stolen base.
On the season, Szczerba is second on the team with a .400 batting average and he has recorded 16 hits, has hit three home runs and has scored a team-best 13 runs and is tied for the team lead in RBIs with 9. In addition, he has hit two doubles, has drawn five walks and is 5-for-6 on stolen bases. He enters this week's action riding a five-game hitting streak and has reached base in five straight games.
In addition to Szczerba, Delta State's Michael Manley was named the NCBWA Division II South Region Pitcher of the Week.
Along with naming their Players of the Week in all seven of the NCAA D-II regions, the NCBWA also announced its National Division II Hitter and Pitcher of the Week as Concord senior infielder Josh Wegner earned Hitter of the Week honors and UC-San Diego senior righthander Ryan Goodbrand was tabbed the Pitcher of the Week.
Szczerba and the Mocs (4-7 on the season) will put its four-game winning streak on the line on Wednesday evening as they host Flagler in a 6 p.m. game at Henley Field.
