WINTER PARK â€" Though sophomore Emanuel Lueber won in straight sets at the top singles flight, #6 Rollins won four of the other singles matches in straight sets as well, and defeated #22 Florida Southern 8-1 on Tuesday afternoon. It was the first Sunshine State Conference match of the season for both teams.
Rollins (1-1) took two of the doubles matches by identical 8-2 scores before the top-flight team of Will Kwok and Robin Marchione defeated Lueber and Benoit Paradis, 8-4. The Tars then won the third through sixth positions in singles all in two sets, while Lueber (Tiengen, Germany) and Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) battled Kwok and Malte Christesen at number one and two.
Lueber, who is ranked #34 in Division II singles, was able to win his match over Kwok, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), but Paradis was unable to finish off Christesen after winning the first set by the score of 6-4. Christesen, who is ranked #36, came back with 6-1 and 6-4 wins in the final two sets to give the Tars their final margin of victory.
Florida Southern will be on the road again Wednesday when it travels to Daytona Beach to face Embry-Riddle, the top-ranked NAIA program in the country.
