SALISBURY, N.C. â€" Florida Southern continued their mid-season woes here on the campus of Catawba College as the Moccasins fell, 10-9, in Deep South Conference action to Catawba. It was the fourth loss in a row for the Mocs who now fall to 3-7 on the season and 1-4 in DSC play.
The Mocs would get behind early as Catawba found the net first taking a quick 1-0. However the Mocs would tie the game not too long after. Catawba would score the next goal but FSC ended the first quarter scoring two goals, taking a 3-2 lead into the second quarter. The Mocs scored one goal late in the second as the Catawba Indians scored the first two goals of the period. The Catawba Indians and the Mocs held a 4-4 tie going into halftime.
The second-half and third quarter became all Catawba as they opened their third straight quarter with the first goal; they would tack on two more goals before the Mocs ended the third quarter scoring a goal of their own. The Catawba Indians headed into the fourth and final quarter with a 7-5 lead.Â
FSC opened the fourth with a goal of their own but the Catawba Indians added two more to stretch their lead to 9-6. The Mocs would put together what would seem as their one last ditch effort; closing the gap to 9-7 with 4:27 remaining in the game. Catawba would add one more goal to push the lead to 10-7 with a little over three minutes remaining in the game.Â
The Mocs would actually post one more comeback attempt, as Chris Murphy and Brian Weil both scored goals to in the final 31 seconds of the game. With the Catawba Indian lead dropped to only one, 10-9, with only 17 seconds left, Catawba would get the final face-off attempt and hold onto the ball to finish the game.
FSC was led offensively by Dane Sorensen, who scored four goals and assisted on another for a total of five points. Logan Muether received the loss, falling to 0-2 on the season between the pipes. Muether tallied seven saves in the match.
Christian Klimczyk, Catawba’s goalie, allowed all nine goals by the Mocs but also stepped up big in the cage tallying 15 saves on the night to secure the win for the Catawba Indians.
The Mocs will continue their Carolina road-trip, Saturday, March 30 taking on Coker in Hartsville, S.C.
