Box Score
HARTSVILLE, S.C. â€" Florida Southern stopped their four game losing streak with a 12-7 victory, this afternoon, against the Coker Cobras in a non-conference match-up here at Byerly Park. The Moccasins improve to 4-7 overall while the Cobras fall to 2-10 on the season.
FSC took no time getting on the board as they scored two goals in the first four minutes of action. Chris Murphy got the Mocs on the board first scoring at the 12:52 mark while Dane Sorensen added the second goal of the game approximately two minutes later, giving the Mocs a 2-0 lead. What at first seemed like it could be a high scoring output by the Mocs, quickly went the other way as the Cobras’ defense held FSC to no goals the rest of the first half, shutting out the Mocs in quarter number two.
The Mocs defense was just as on point as the Coker defense, allowing the Cobras to score with 6:36 remaining in the first quarter. The Cobras were shutout the rest of the first and shutout in the second quarter as well.
Only three goals were scored between the two teams in the first half but that all changed in the start of the third quarter as Coker scored three straight man-up goals in the first 2:21 of the second-half to take a 4-2 lead after being down by one at the start of the quarter. The Cobras found the net twice in the first minute of action before putting in the third goal of the quarter at the 12:39 mark.
It didn’t take the Mocs long to regain the lead, going on a 3-0 run of their own and taking a 5-4 lead on a goal by Kevin Naslonski. The Cobras then retied it at 5-5 before Murphy would score the go-ahead goal with 2:06 remaining in the quarter to take a 6-5 lead. Shane Tompkins added another while Stephen Boyle put in another only 10 seconds after Tomkins’ goal to push the Mocs lead to 8-5 going into the final period.
The fourth quarter was much like the third with the Mocs scoring in bunches. They would outscore the Cobras, 4-2 to extend their lead to 12-7 before the quarter was over. The Cobras struck first in the fourth scoring a goal and reducing the Mocs lead to 8-6; that’s as close as Coker would get the rest of the way with the Mocs countering with two goals of their own. Coker would score once more with approximately six minutes left to close within three, but FSC put it away scoring two more goals, with the first coming with 1:54 remaining in the game and the other entering the net with 56 seconds remaining in the game to end the contest with a final score of 12-7.
The Mocs outshot the Cobras in every quarter holding a 47-28 advantage in the category for the game. FSC also held a 45-27 advantage in ground balls while only tallying 11 turnovers in the game compared to 20 for the Cobras.
Dan Krispinsky once again had an outstanding performance at faceoff, winning 16-of-19 attempts and picking up six ground balls on the afternoon.
Five different Moccasins scored two goals while four FSC players recorded three points on the afternoon. Scoring two goals during the game were Murphy, Boyle, Sorensen, Tompkins and Brian Weil. Leading the Mocs in assists was Naslonski who added two assists to his one goal performance.
Freshman goalkeeper Logan Muether (1-2) earned his first collegiate victory in the cage, playing all but just a few seconds while serving a penalty and allowing just six goals with nine saves on the afternoon.
Coker’s goalie, Tim Ryan, gave-up all 12 goals but tallied 14 saves for the game.
