Keith Curcio Named Capital One Academic All-District Selection

Box Score

LAKELAND - Florida Southern sophomore infielder/outfielder Keith Curcio was named to the Capital One/CoSIDA NCAA Division II Academic All-District Baseball Team from District 5 Friday afternoon.

Curcio, who is a native of Sarasota, Fla., was one of seven players from Sunshine State Conference schools named to the 10-member team that was voted on by Sports Information Directors (SIDs) from District 5 schools.

He is the first Moc baseball player to earn Academic All-District honors since Tyler Benzel and senior designated hitter Colin Kish (Philadelphia, Pa.) were named Second-Team selections in 2011.

With his selection, Curcio is now eligible for Academic All-American honors as he advances to the Capital One Division II Academic All-America ballot for baseball. The Academic All-American team will be announced later in the month of May.

In order to be eligible for the Academic All-District team honors, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and be at least a sophomore in eligibility and be a starter or key player on the team.

Curcio, who is in his second season as a starter for the Moccasins on the diamond, carries a 3.56 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in criminology at FSC. On the season, Curcio has played in and started all 40 games, including starting 26 games at third base and leads the team in batting with a .338 average. He has recorded 50 hits, scored 31 runs, hit seven doubles, one triple, one home run and has had 23 RBIs. In addition, he has walked 21 times and leads the team and is second in the SSC in stolen bases with 26 as he is 26-for-31 on steals for the year. Curcio, who was named a Second-Team All-SSC selection a year ago, has recorded 14 multi-hit games and five multiple RBI games this year and enters this weekend's SSC series at Saint Leo currently in the midst of four-game hitting streak.

He is joined on the District 5 Division II All-District Team by Tampa senior pitcher Aaron Gerbasi, Tampa senior pitcher Ben Brown, Tampa senior catcher Adam Pendleton, Eckerd senior infielder Lee Spinelle, North Alabama senior infielder Andrew Almon, West Alabama senior infielder Matthew Magee, Tampa junior outfielder Zach Gawrych, Delta State junior outfielder Jordan Chovanec and Lynn senior outfielder Paul Stortini.

Curcio and the Mocs (16-24 overall, 8-10 SSC) return to action this weekend as they travel to Saint Leo for a three-game SSC series against the Lions (28-12-1 overall, 11-9-1 SSC). The teams will play a single nine inning game on Friday beginning at 6 p.m., before concluding the series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
