LAKELAND - Florida Southern opened the home portion of its 2014 spring schedule here Tuesday by posting a 7-2 victory over Eckerd in Sunshine State Conference action at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center on the FSC campus.
With the win, the 26th-ranked Moccasins improved to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the SSC, while Eckerd fell to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the SSC.
In Tuesday's victory, the Mocs opened by taking all three doubles matches, including winning at both the No. 2 and No. 3 spot by identical 8-3 scores. FSC's No. 1 doubles team of junior Emanuel Lueber (Tiengen, Germany) and senior Benoit Paradis (Quebec City, Quebec) won its second match of the season as they defeated Eckerd's top doubles team, 8-5.
The Mocs only two losses in the match came at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots as Lueber, who is ranked 49th in Division II, fell in a third-set tiebreaker to Eckerd's Yosua Adiyasa at the No. 1 spot, while senior Nathan Leavitt (Bradenton, Fla.) fell in a third-set tiebreaker to Eckerd's Nikita Valuiskikh at the No. 2 spot. Lueber fell 6-2, 5-7, 10-3 and Leavitt fell 6-2, 2-6, 10-5.
FSC sealed the match win at the No. 4 singles spot as Paradis defeated Eckerd's Stephen Felman, 6-2, 6-0 to give the Mocs five wins. FSC's other singles wins came at the No. 3 spot as junior Carl Lundberg (Stocksund, Sweden) won at the No. 3 spot (6-0, 6-0), while senior Vladimir Barabash (Puhovka, Ukraine) won 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 5 spot and junior Charles Garneau (L'ancienne-Lorette, Quebec) won at the No. 6 spot in a three-set tiebreaker (6-7 (5), 6-2, 10-5).
The Mocs will continue its homestand on Wednesday, Feb. 19 as they host ninth-ranked Rollins in a 3 p.m. match at the Warden Tennis Center.
