LAKELAND - Florida Southern opened the home portion of its 2014 spring schedule here Tuesday afternoon by posting a 9-0 shutout victory over Eckerd in a Sunshine State Conference match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Mocs improve to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the SSC, while Eckerd falls to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in the SSC. In addition, the victory also extended the Mocs home win streak to eight consecutive matches dating to last season as FSC hasn't lost on the courts at the Warden Center since falling 6-3 to Saint Leo on March 6, 2013.
In Tuesday's match, the Mocs opened by sweeping all three doubles matches, including its No .3 team senior Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) and senior Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) earning an 8-0 win over Eckerd's No. 3 team of Amy Naula and Emily Fridrik. The Mocs No. 10 nationally-ranked team of senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) and junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) posted an 8-2 win at the No. 1 spot and junior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) and freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany) also earned an 8-2 win at the No. 2 spot.
Leading 3-0 in the match heading into singles play, the Mocs would dominate in singles as they allowed the Tritons to take just 17 points in the six singles matches.
Spagnuolo was the first Moc to complete her singles action as she picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at the No. 4 spot against Eckerd's Emily Fridrik and FSC got its fifth point to earn the match victory at the No. 5 spot as Friedrichs picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win over Eckerd's Katie Benn.
The most competitive singles match was at the No. 6 spot in the line-up as junior Christie Nunnemann (St. Simons Island, Ga.) picked up a 6-2, 7-6 win over Naula. FSC's other winners in singles were No. 22 ranked Riutort at the No. 1 spot (6-0, 6-4), No. 36 ranked Goge (6-1, 6-1) and Dominguez (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 3 spot.
FSC will remain at home as they host sixth-ranked Lynn in a 2 p.m. match on Thursday, Feb. 20 at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The Fighting Knights will be the second ranked team the Mocs have faced this season as they opened its 2014 spring season with a 9-0 loss on Saturday at No. 3 Barry.
