LAKELAND - Florida Southern closed out its two-match homestand here Thursday afternoon by dropping a hard-fought match to sixth-ranked Lynn in Sunshine State Conference action at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
Thursday's match was FSC's second one this week as they posted a 9-0 shutout win at home on Tuesday against Eckerd. With Thursday's setback, the Mocs fell to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the SSC on the young season, while Lynn improves to 7-0 and 4-0 in the SSC. Both of FSC's losses have come against Top 6 nationally ranked foes as the Mocs opened the spring with a 9-0 loss at third-ranked Barry this past Saturday.
In Thursday's match, the 11th-ranked Moccasins opened the match by taking one of the three doubles matches as senior Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) and senior Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) picked up an 8-2 win at the No. 3 spot over Lynn's Kim Przeszlowski and Aleks Vukadinovic.
The Mocs fell 8-4 at the No. 2 doubles spot and its No. 1 doubles team of senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Lativa) and junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain), who are ranked 10th in Division II, battled back-and-fourth against Lynn's Vale Confalonieri and Ioana Ivan, who is ranked fifth in Division II. The Fighting Knights duo would ultimately prevail 9-7 to give Lynn a 2-1 edge in the match heading into singles.
Lynn sealed its victory by posting wins in singles at No. 1, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5. At the No. 1 spot, Confalonieri, who is the top-ranked women's singles player in D-II, earned a 6-2, 6-2 win over 22nd-ranked ranked Riutort, while 11th-ranked Ivan defeated Dominguez (6-1, 6-2) at the No. 3 spot. 21st-ranked Andrea Berkova defeated junior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) at the No. 4 and Alina Jane dispatched freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany), 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 5 spot.
FSC earned wins in singles at the No. 2 and No. 6 spots as 36th-ranked Goga defeated Rosalie Willig (6-2, 7-6) to earn her second win of the season at the No. 2 spot, while Wichmann posted her first win of the season in singles at the No. 6 spot after defeating Lynn's Przeszlowksi in a third-set tiebreaker. Wichman lost the first set, 6-4, but rebounded to earn a 6-3 win in the second set and then collected a 10-3 win in the tiebreaker.
The Mocs will now hit the road for four consecutive matches beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 26 with a 3:30 p.m. match in Winter Park against ninth-ranked Rollins. The match was originally scheduled for Feb. 7, but the weather forced the match to be postponed and ultimately rescheduled.
