Singles Sweep for the Moccasins Gives FSC 8-1 Win Over Washburn

LAKELAND â€" Laura Wichmann and Joalis Dominguez cruised to an 8-0 doubles win to start Friday’s match, and each player moved up in the lineup for a straight-set singles win to lead 10th-ranked Florida Southern to an 8-1 win over Washburn (KA).

The Moccasins (9-3) were without their normal #2 singles player, Sabine Goge, who was away with other college commitments, but the rest of the team stepped up accordingly and gave Florida Southern its third straight win, and its sixth win of the season by either an 8-1 or 9-0 score. Wichmann and Dominguez picked up their fifth shutout doubles win of the season to give the Mocs their first point before Dominique Friedrichs and Olivia Spagnuolo gave them another with an 8-2 decision at the No. 2 doubles slot.

In singles play, all six Moccasins won in straight sets, with Wichmann posting a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, and Dominguez sliding into the No. 2 position for a 6-3, 6-2 victory. In between those two matches, Pamela Paradis provided Florida Southern with the clinching point at No. 5, earning her fifth straight singles win to improve to 5-1 on the season.

Also winning in singles for Florida Southern were Magda Riutort at No. 1, Friedrichs at No. 3, and Crystal Copeland at No. 6.

Florida Southern will play again on Sunday afternoon when it hosts Palm Beach Atlantic at 2 p.m.
