Mocs Win Fourth Straight Match, Posts Shutout Home Win Over Palm Beach Atlantic

LAKELAND â€" Florida Southern continued its season-long eight-match homestand here Sunday afternoon by posting a 9-0 shutout victory over Palm Beach Atlantic in a non-conference, South Region match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.

With Sunday's victory, the 10th-ranked Moccasins extended its win streak to four straight wins and improved its record to 10-3 on the season, while PBA falls to 13-7 on the season.

In Sunday's win, the Mocs opened by sweeping all three doubles as they dropped just a total of eight games. FSC's 10th-ranked No. 1 team of senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) and junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) improved to 9-3 at the No. 1 spot after earning an 8-3 win.

The Mocs also won 8-1 at the No. 3 spot and its No. 2 team of freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany) and junior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) improved to 9-4 on the season after picking up an 8-4 win.

Meanwhile, in singles play, the Mocs dropped a total of six games in five of its six matches, as the only the match at the No. 5 spot between Friedrichs and PBA's Maja Jovic needed a third set tiebreaker.

Olivia Spagnuolo posted back-to-back 6-0 wins at the No. 4 spot, while 36th-ranked Goge was leading Yoanna Peshev 4-0 in the first set when Peshev was forced to retire at the No. 2 spot. Junior Victoria Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) improved to 4-0 on the year in singles with her 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 6 spot over PBA's Liddy Robinson.

Riutort, who is ranked 22nd nationally in singles, won her fourth straight match at the No. 1 spot as she dropped just three games as she won 6-3, 6-0 over Veena Vasquez, who is ranked 14th in the lastest South Region singles rankings. Senior Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) dropped only two games at the No. 3 spot as she won 6-2, 6-0 over PBA's Jessica Wharton.

The best match of the day came at the No. 5 spot as Friedrichs won her fourth consecutive match as she posted a 6-3, 2-6, 11-9 win over Jovic.

FSC will conclude its homestand on Tuesday, March 25 as they host Missouri-St. Louis in a 3 p.m. match at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
