Behind Four Hits From Curcio, Mocs Collect 8-7 Home Win Over #7 Grand Valley State

Box Score

LAKELAND - Florida Southern recorded 12 hits, including a career-high tying four hits from junior centerfielder Keith Curcio en route to earning an impressive come-from-behind 7-6 victory over No. 7 ranked Grand Valley State in a non-conference game at historic Henley Field.

The victory, which was the third straight for the Mocs against a nationally ranked foe as they won two games last weekend at then 12th-ranked Mount Olive, improved the Mocs to 12-6 overall on the season, while GVSU, who was playing its third game on its trip to Florida, fell to 4-2 on the season.

FSC, who trailed 6-3 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, plated three runs in the fourth to tie the game at 6 and then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning on an RBI single to left by Curcio. The RBI was the Sarasota native's second of game as he also had an RBI double in the three-run fourth inning.

It was the second four-hit game of the season for a Moccasin player as senior second baseman Conor Szczerba (Titusville, Fla.) recorded four hits against Albany State on Feb. 15. In addition, the four hits ties Curcio career-high for hits in a game as he recorded four hits in a game as a freshman in 2012 against Rollins.

In Wednesday's game, Grand Valley State used a hit, two walks, a wild pitch and a throwing error by Moccasin senior first baseman Trey Vavra (Menomonie, Wis.) to take score an unearned run in the first inning off of Moccasin redshirt sophomore hurler Jake Popovich (Danville, Calif.), who making his fourth start of the season.

The Mocs would answer in the bottom of the second inning as they used four hits to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead. In the inning, redshirt sophomore Dominic Brugnoni (St. Clair Shores, Mich.) and junior shortstop Casey Eddinger (Crawfordville, Fla.) each had RBI singles and junior leftfielder Trevor Freeman (Shalimar, Fla.) drove home the other run on a groundout to third.

GVSU would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the third inning thanks to a 2-run single by Kevin Zak, which came one batter after Jesse Abel reached on a fielding error in left by Freeman.

The Lakers would retake the lead the next inning as they recorded three hits and took advantage two hit batsmen to plate three runs and take a 6-3 lead. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run, two-out double down the left field line by Abel. After Popovich hit Zak to load the bases, the Lakers scored its next run on batter later as Giancarlo Brugnoni, who is the older brother of FSC's Dominic Brugnoni, was hit on an 0-1 pitch by freshman reliever Craig Savage (Apopka, Fla.). Savage, though, would prevent further damage as he forced Taylor Banks to hit into a fielder's choice grounder at third base.

FSC would answer GVSU's three runs in the top of the fourth by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 6-all. Senior leftfielder J.J. Downum (Land O'Lakes, Fla.) got the inning started with a lead-off triple to deep center and would score on an sacrifice fly to right by Szczerba to push the Mocs within two runs at 6-4. After senior designated hitter Jimmy Correnti (Fort Myers, Fla.) struck out for the second out of the inning, Curcio delivered a Patrick Kelly pitch to center for his fifth double of the season, which plated Eddinger, who had reached on a fielder's choice bunt, for the second run of the inning and Vavra would follow Curcio with a RBI single through the left side to tie the game at 6.

The Mocs would take the lead in the sixth on Curcio's single to left that plated Eddinger with the seventh run of the game. Eddinger led off the inning by being hit by a Kelly pitch, moved to second on a bunt by Szczerba, advanced to third on a Correnti groundout and scored on Curcio's single. The RBI by Curcio was his seventh of the season.

At the point, the Mocs turned the game over to its bullpen as junior Austin Barnett (Lakeland, Fla.), junior Casey Eskew (Sarasota, Fla.) and senior Nate Carter (Boca Raton, Fla.) combined to allow just one hit and record five strikeouts over the final three innings of the game to seal the victory.

Barnett (1-0), who was the third Moccasin pitcher of the night, threw two scoreless innings as he allowed three hits and tied a career-high with three strikeouts to pick up the win, while Carter struck out two of the three Laker batters he faced in ninth to earn his second save of the season and his 14th save of his career. The 14 saves is third-most on the school's all-time charts.

Eskew pitched a scoreless eighth inning as he recorded one strikeout.

Popovich threw 3.2 innings and allowed five hits and six runs (four earned), while walking four and striking out one.

In addition to Curcio's four hits and two stolen bases, Szczerba had two hits on the night. Six other Mocs had one hit apiece for the game.

Zak, Brugnoni and Ariel Aracena-Sanchez each had two hits for the Lakers as they recorded nine hits for the game.

Kelly (0-1) earned the loss on the mound for GVSU as he pitched six innings and allowed 11 hits and seven runs, while walking one and fanning six.

The Mocs will now turn its attention to Sunshine State Conference play as they open its league schedule this coming weekend with a three-game series in Miami Shores against 10th-ranked Barry. The teams will begin the series with a 6 p.m. single game on Friday, March 7, before concluding the series with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 8.
