Mocs Conclude Regular Season With Hard-Fought 5-4 Setback at #8 Rollins

WINTER PARK - Florida Southern closed out its 2014 spring regular season schedule here Wednesday afternoon by dropping a hard-fought 5-4 decision to eighth-ranked Rollins in Sunshine State Conference action at the Martin Complex on the Rollins campus.

The setback was just the second of the 10th-ranked Moccasins in its last 11 matches and dropped its record to 15-5 overall and 5-3 in the SSC, while Rollins improved to 15-5 overall and 4-3 in the SSC.

In Wednesday's regular season finale, the Mocs opened the match by losing two of three matches in doubles with its only win coming at the No. 3 spot as seniors Joalis Dominguez (Vero Beach, Fla.) and Laura Wichmann (Waldshut-Tiengen, Germany) posted an 8-4 win over Rollins' No. 3 team of Johanna Olsson and Ashley Loft. The win improved Dominguez and Wichmann to 14-4 overall and 5-2 in the SSC.

Rollins won the other two doubles matches by identical 8-3 scores, including snapping a nine-match win streak at No. 1 doubles by senior Sabine Goge (Cesis, Latvia) and junior Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain). Goge and Riutort, who fell to 15-4 on the season, fell to Elissa DeCampli and Ashley Rosenberg.

Meanwhile, in singles action, the Mocs earned wins at the No. 3, 4 and 6 spots, while Rollins won at the No. 1, 2 and 5 spots to claim the victory.

FSC's singles wins came at the No. 3 spot by Dominguez as she posted a straight set win (6-1, 6-0) over Shannon Etten. The win improved Dominguez to 11-3 on the season, including 8-3 at the No. 3 spot this season.

At the No. 4 spot, junior Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) picked up a straight set win (6-3, 6-2) win over Taylor Brown, while Wichmann needed a tiebreaker to earn a hard-fought victory at the No. 6 spot over Loft. Wichmann won the first set, 6-3 and then earned a 7-6 (7-4) win in the second set.

Riutort fell at the No. 1 spot to 17th-ranked DeCampli in straight sets (6-2, 6-4), while Goge fell in a three sets to Rosenberg at the No. 2 spot and Mariana Salvador defeated freshman Dominique Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany) at the No. 5 spot in straight sets.

The singles match at No. 2 was one of the best of the day as the two players battled back-and-forth as Rosenberg won the first set, 6-3, but Goge rebounded to post a 6-3 win in the second set to force a third set. In the third set, Rosenberg picked up a 6-2 win to seal Rollins' victory. The loss was just the second of the season in singles for Goge as she fell to 16-2 on the year.

FSC, who are currently third in the SSC standings, will next return to action on April 24-26 as they travel to Winter Park to compete in the 2014 SSC Championships. The winner of the SSC Tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, which is scheduled for May 3-6.
