#6 Florida Southern Puts Up Fifth 20-Point Game of the Season in Win Over Shorter

Box Score

ROME, Ga. - In the first of a two-game road trip to the Peach State, No. 6 easily took care of host Shorter, 21-4, in non-conference action at Ben Bradley Field.

With the win, the Moccasins improve to 14-2 on the year as the regular season draws closer and closer to completion for the fourth-ranked team in the South Region, based on the latest NCAA Division II Regional rankings. Meanwhile, the Hawks end their 2014 regular season with a record of 5-9.

Shorter held an early two-goal lead on the Mocs, putting the ball in the back of the net in the first two minutes of the opening half, but it would be the only time the Hawks would hold the goal advantage over the Moccasins. Junior Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) assisted on the first three FSC goals of the afternoon to put the Mocs up 3-2 before continuing a run of 11 consecutive first-half goals.

Chase's dishes went to junior Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.), sophomore Ashley Robertson (Ellicott City, Md.) and junior Meghan Colucci (Glocester, R.I.) to put the Mocs up before pouring it on the Hawks. Asper would score another three goals in the first half, while Robertson, junior Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.), redshirt-freshman Allie Kryjak (Potomac, Md.), Chase and freshman Chloe Cabigas (Maitland, Fla.) would all find the back of the net to give the overwhelming Moccasins an 11-2 lead over Shorter going into halftime.

Robertson scored her third goal of the afternoon just 2:24 into the second half, and Hoover would score off another dish from Chase before Shorter responded at 22:42 to put the score at 13-3. Hoover's second goal of the half was proceeded by another Shorter goal to make it 14-4.

With over 19 minutes left in the game, Florida Southern continued to find success in the offensive zone of the field, even as they began the process of removing their starters for players with less playing experience. Back-to-back goals from the captains Asper and Chase, followed by rips from sophomore Cassie Crain (Bunnell, Fla.), junior Maureen Cromer (Baltimore, Md.), and two more from Asper and Chase to seal another Moccasin victory.

Asper paved the way for the Moccasins, scoring six goals to lead the offense. Chase tallied nine points off of six assists and three goals, putting her over the 100-goal plateau on the season. Hoover and Robertson also tallied hat-tricks in the win, while the captain from Annapolis also dished out three assists for a total of six points and led the way with six draw control victories.

Asper also picked up a career-high nine groundballs against the Hawks, and joined Hoover, Robertson and sophomore Gabrielle Barowski (Alexandria, Va.) in causing three turnovers each to combine for 12 of the team's 15 caused turnovers. In goal, senior Katie Hammerer (California, Md.) made six saves in 55:21 on the field, while freshman Taylor Gillis (Bel Air, Md.) played the final 4:39 of the game.

Shelby Beverly led the Shorter offense with three of their four goals, while Crystal Marshall contributed with the fourth score. Beverly also led the team with four draw controls, and scored two of her goals on free position attempts to help the team go 3-5 in that category.

On the defensive side of the field, Bethany Fevella led the Hawks with four caused turnovers, while Taylor Moody picked up five groundballs to go along with her 14 saves on the afternoon in the loss.

Florida Southern has a quick period of rest before returning to the field again at 9 a.m. tomorrow when they face off against Shepherd (9-5) at Ben Bradley Field in Rome, Ga.
