LAKELAND - Florida Southern redshirt sophomore outfielder Dominic Brugnoni and junior catcher Joey Miller have been named to the Capital One/CoSIDA NCAA Division II All-District Baseball Team from District 5 Thursday afternoon.
Brugnoni, who is a native of St. Clair Shores, Mich., and Miller, who is a native of Sarasota, Fla., were two of 10 players from Sunshine State Conference schools named to the 11-member team that was voted on Sports Information Directors (SIDs) from District 5 schools.
It is the second straight season the 18th-ranked Moccasins have had a player earn Academic All-District honors as junior centerfielder Keith Curcio (Sarasota, Fla.) was honored as a first team honoree last season. It is the first time the Mocs have had two players named Academic All-District selections in the same season since 2011 when Tyler Benzel and Colin Kish were honored as second team selections.
With their selections, Brugnoni and Miller are now eligible for Academic All-America honors as they advance to the Capital One Academic All-America ballot for Division II Baseball. The Academic All-America Team will be announced later this month.
In order to be eligible for the Academic All-District team honors, a student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30 and be at least a sophomore in eligibility and be a starter or key player on the team.
Brugnoni, who is in his second season as a starter for the Mocs, carries a 3.35 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in biology at FSC. On the season, Brugnoni has played in and started all 44 games in right field. He leads the team in batting with a .344 average heading into this weekend's final SSC series of the season at Eckerd. He has recorded 56 hits, scored 33 runs, hit six doubles, is tied for the team lead in triples with four and is tied for second on the team in home runs with five and has recorded 39 RBIs, which is second-most on the squad. Additionally, he is slugging a team-best .521 and has an on-base percentage of .382 as he has drawn 10 walks and been hit by two pitches. He is tied for the team lead in multi-hit games with 19 and has had nine multiple RBI games this season, which is third on the team and is currently in the midst of a three-game hitting streak and had a career-best nine game hit streak earlier this season.
Miller, who is in his second season as a starter behind the plate for the Mocs, carries a 3.64 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in biology at FSC. On the season, Miller has played in 36 games and made 35 starts at catcher. He is hitting .303 as he has recorded 40 hits, scored 18 runs, hit four doubles, three home runs and has had 26 RBIs. Additionally, he has drawn 13 walks, has a .360 on-base percentage and has a .402 slugging percentage. Entering this weekend's final SSC series at Eckerd, Miller has recorded 11 multi-hit games and has had eight multiple RBI games, including driving home a career-high four runs earlier this season at Mount Olive.
The Moccasin twosome are joined on the District 5 Division II Academic All-District Team by Tama senior pitcher Preston Packrall, Tampa sophomore pitcher Michael Caulkins, Barry senior infielder Tyler Kellmann, Florida Tech senior infielder Andrew Bartlett, Eckerd junior infielder Mike Abraham, Union (Tenn.) junior infielder Caleb Warnimont, Tampa senior outfielder Zach Gawrych, Nova Southeastern senior outfielder Brooks Fleming and Tampa senior designated hitter Sean O'Brien.
Brugnoni, Miller and the Mocs (31-15 overall, 13-8 SSC) close out the regular season portion of its schedule with a three game series beginning on Thursday at Eckerd. First pitch for Thursday's series opener is set for 6 p.m., with the two teams playing a doubleheader on Friday, May 2 to conclude the series beginning at 11 a.m.
