Complete Moccasin Game Notes
LAKELAND - Seventh-ranked Florida Southern is set to begin a two-game road trip on Wednesday as they face rival Saint Leo in a 7:30 p.m. Sunshine State Conference match-up at the Bowman Activities Center on the SLU campus.
The Moccasins, who fell five spots to No. 7 in this week's latest NABC/Division II Coaches' Poll, enter the game sporting an 11-1 overall record and an 0-1 mark in the SSC after suffering a 107-102 loss in its league opener on Saturday at home against then 11th-ranked Barry. The loss to Barry snapped FSC's 11 game win streak and also snapped its nine game homecourt win streak.
Meanwhile, Saint Leo comes into the game as one of the hottest teams in the league as the Lions have reeled off five consecutive victories to raise its record to 9-4 overall on the season and 1-1 in the SSC. SLU's latest win in this stretch came last Saturday at home as the Lions downed Florida Tech, 69-64, to collect its first SSC win of the season. The Lions opened league play with a 64-56 loss at then No. 12 Barry on Dec. 6.
Wednesday's game will mark the 104th all-time in the series against the two schools that less than 45 miles from each other. FSC holds an 86-17 all-time lead in the series, but has lost five of the last eight games in the series. The two teams split the season series a year ago as FSC recorded a 92-86 win at Saint Leo and the Lions picked up a 76-73 win in overtime in Lakeland.
Following Wednesday's game, the Mocs will conclude its two-game road swing with a 4 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 10 in Davie against Nova Southeastern (5-5, 1-1 SSC).
