ST. PETERSBURG - Florida Southern showed little rust following a 10-day layoff from action here Tuesday afternoon as the 10th-ranked Moccasins picked up an 8-1 win over Eckerd in Sunshine State Conference action at the Dick Bullard Courts on the Eckerd College campus.
With the win, the Mocs improve to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the SSC, while Eckerd falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
In Tuesday's victory, the Mocs went 6-for-6 singles as they dropped a total of 27 games in winning all six matches in straight sets and picked up two wins in doubles to earn the win.
Eckerd scored its only point of the match at No. 3 doubles as its team of Katie Benn and Carson Trapp picked up an 8-2 victory over FSC's tandem of freshmen Katie Stanford (Lake Worth, Fla.) and Cassie Eldredge (Peachtree City, Ga.).
In the other two doubles matches, Moccasin seniors Magda Riutort (Petra, Spain) and Olivia Spagnuolo (Andover, Mass.) defeated Gipson Hawn and Amy Naula, 8-5 at the No. 1 spot, while freshmen Nina Vucevic (Beausoleil, France) and Katie Taylor-Doran (Brisbane, Australia) defeated Emily Fridrik and Erika Fridrik 8-3 at the No. 2 spot.
Meanwhile, in singles action, Vucevic dropped just two games in winning by identical 6-1 scores at the No. 3 spot, while Spagnuolo surrendered just one game in winning 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Riutort lost just three games at the No. 1 spot as she defeated Hawn, 6-2, 6-1 and Taylor-Doran lost just three games as she won 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.
The other two singles matches were competitive as Eldridge posted a 7-5, 7-5 win at the No. 5 spot over Benn and freshman Shannon Griffin (Winter Haven, Fla.) posted a 6-3, 7-5 win at the No. 6 spot over Erika Fridrik.
FSC will play their next match on Sunday, March 1 as they face 42nd-ranked Grand Valley State in at 1 p.m. in Orlando.
