Top Three Positions Win for FSC but PBA Takes Opening Match 6-3

WEST PALM BEACH – Florida Southern got wins from each of its top three singles players, but Palm Beach Atlantic used a pair of 2-point wins in doubles and three straight-set singles wins of its own to top the 10th-ranked Moccasins 6-3 in the season opener for both teams.

While the Sailfish posted an 8-0 win at No. 3 doubles, the other two matches could have gone either way. The Sailfish, however, managed to get wins in each of those as well, with Veena Vasquez and Valerie Nagovitcina defeating Magda Riutort and Olivia Spagnuolo 8-6 at the No. 1 position, and Yoanna Peshew and Maja Jovic pulling out a 9-7 win over Katie Taylor-Doran and Nina Vucevic at No. 2 for a 3-0 lead.

All six singles matches were decided in two sets, with the Moccasins receiving wins from Riutort, Spagnuolo, and Vucevic. Riutort's match was the most competitive with the senior All-American winning each set over Vasquez at the top flight, 7-5. Spagnuolo was a 6-2, 7-6 winner in the second flight, and Vucevic won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

The Moccasins will play their next match on Saturday, February 14, when they host 3rd-ranked Saint Leo at 11 a.m.
