Women's Lacrosse Cuts Down Shorter on Senior Day

Box Score

LAKELAND – Florida Southern recognized its four seniors preceding a 20-1 victory over Shorter in its final regular-season home game at Bryant Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Seniors Meghan Colucci (Glocester, R.I.), Megan Asper (Parkton, Md.), Lorianne Hoover (Annapolis, Md.), and Caitlin Chase (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) are the first four-year lettermen to come through Kara Reber's program at Florida Southern (16-2, 2-0 SSC) in her four seasons as head coach. The four seniors combined for 21 of the Moccasins' 36 points in the game, and have contributed a combined 873 points in their careers, including 505 goals and 368 assists.

"The seniors are 100-percent the foundation of this program," said Reber. "They came in at its inception and stuck it out for four years, and have set every mark in the record book for this program."

Colucci, who started the season-opener between the pipes, recorded four saves that game in addition to her 60 career points. She has scored 33 goals, including a personal-best four goal performance against Shepherd last season, as well as 27 helpers. She had her best season as a junior, putting up 28 points in 16 games on 18 goals and 10 assists.

Asper, the program leader in career goals with 191, has notched 253 points in her four years as a Moccasin including 62 assists.

"I think it's cool to see that there are other programs that started at the same time we did that haven't even broken an even record yet," said Asper. "What we've been able to accomplish in these four years is bitter-sweet having to leave. It's definitely been the best ride you could ever ask for with four years of lacrosse. We came into a D-II program without a name at all, and we're going out as a top-five team."

Hoover has notched 225 points in her career, netting 147 goals and providing 78 assists. In addition to her offensive contributions, she has been just as important in the defensive zone picking up a school-record 149 ground balls and 234 draw controls.

"I think that how successful we were in our inaugural year helped a lot of these girls that are here now," said Hoover. "Being able to make the statement that we did and proving that this new program is not going to be like any other new program, and being part of the group that started that is amazing."

Chase, the only Moccasin in history to record 300 points, currently has 335, including being the first one to break the 200 assist mark with five in today's game. She now has 201 helpers in addition to her 134 goals.

"I think it's something that we're all proud of," said Chase on being part of the first graduation four-year letterman class at FSC. "We started from the bottom, came in with the first team and made a good run for it."

"(Chase) is one of the smartest lacrosse players I have ever coached," added Reber. "She has a really good lacrosse I.Q. from her vision to knowing the situations, and handling all the pressure."

Naturally, both Asper and Chase each scored a game-high seven points with Asper being the leading goal scorer (3) and Chase leading the way in assists (5). Fifteen different Mocs scored in the game, and 17 different players recorded a point.

The scoring opened 35-seconds into the game from the stick of Asper, and the Mocs got out to a 5-0 lead in the first 4:10. They would get out to a 9-0 lead before Shorter's (3-7) Devin Spero scored the only goal against the fifth-ranked team in Division II.

Redshirt-freshman goalie Ashley Seborowski (Annapolis, Md.) had an easy time improving to 14-1 on the season after starting, going the first seven-and-a-half minutes of the game without facing a shot. She would be pulled after the Mocs' ninth goal and be replaced by sophomore Taylor Gillis (Bel Air, Md.). Gillis would face the only two Hawks shots in the game, making one save.

The Mocs would go on to score four more goals in the first half, taking a 13-1 lead into halftime.

Seven more goals would come in the final 30 minutes, including the final goal from junior Rachael Griffith (Ellicott City, Md.) with 1:09 left on the clock. Griffith scored for the first time this season and third time in her career.

Florida Southern returns to action on Wednesday, April 15, as the fifth-ranked Moccasins put their 16-2 overall and perfect 2-0 record in the SSC on the line at the University of Tampa (5-9, 0-2 SSC).
