Box Score LAKELAND, FL - Brindl Langley set a school record for career digs on Senior Day as Florida Southern College volleyball picked up a 3-1 win over Rollins on Saturday at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins (19-9, 10-5 SSC) were able to keep pace near the top of the Sunshine State Conference standings by completing the season sweep of the Tars (11-17, 3-10).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Florida Southern set the tone early by earning a hard-fought win in the first set. Leading 16-9 midway trough, the Mocs saw the lead dwindle away as Rollins strung together a 9-1 run to take an 18-17 lead. The Mocs responded by scoring five-straight to grab a 22-18 advantage, and hung on for a 25-22 first-set win.
• The Moccasins dominated the second set, earning a 25-15 win to take a 2-0 match lead. The Mocs used an early 7-0 run and a late 6-0 run to distance themselves from the Tars.
• Rollins won the third set by a 25-20 final, but the story was Florida Southern senior Brindl Langley. On the third point of the set, which gave the Mocs a 2-1 lead, Langley tallied her 1,815th career dig to pass Sara Stewart for the school record. She finished the night with 21 digs.
• Florida Southern led by six points (11-5) early in the fourth set, but the Tars battled back yet again and took a 14-13 lead midway through. That's when the Mocs ripped off an 8-1 run to take a 21-15 lead and never looked back as they closed out the match with a 25-17 fourth-set win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Brindl Langley finished with 21 digs to push her career total to 1,827, a new school record. She has recorded at least 20 digs in 12 different matches this season.
• Florida Southern improved to 87-8 all-time against Rollins, and extended its winning streak to six in a row against the Tars. The Mocs also improved to 485-129 all-time at Jenkins Field Houst, including 11-2 this season. Saturday's match was the final home contest of the year.
• Anna Tovo tallied a career-high 20 kills in the match. She has recorded at least 10 kills in 41-straight matches dating back to last year. She also 21 digs in the match to go along with a solo block and a service ace.
• Nicole Mattson finished with 18 kills on the day. Mattson also recorded 10 digs and two block assists, and has hit double-digits in kills 17 times this year.
• Saturday's match was the final home contest for Melissa Cárdenas, Brindl Langley, Rachel Mostert and Jessica Sullivan. The four seniors were recognized prior to the match, and were joined on the court by family members.
UP NEXT
• Florida Southern will face Embry-Riddle on Tuesday, Nov. 15 in Daytona Beach before closing out the season at Florida Tech on Nov. 18. The Moccasins are currently projected to play in the NCAA Division II South Regional, which will be played Dec. 1-3 or Dec. 2-4.
