LAKELAND - With the conclusion of the 2016 regular season on Saturday afternoon, the pairings have officially been set for this coming weekend's Sunshine State Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament which will be hosted by regular season champion Florida Southern at Lakeland's Bryant Stadium.
The tournament will begin with two semifinal round games on Friday, April 29 and will conclude with the championship game scheduled for Sunday, May 1. The semifinal games are scheduled for 12 and 3 p.m., while the championship game will begin at 12 p.m.
Florida Southern, who is sporting a 14-3 overall record on the year, earned the No. 1 seed in the this year's tournament for the second consecutive season after posting a second straight 4-0 record in league play after collecting a 15-6 win on Thursday at third-ranked Rollins. Along with defeating Rollins in SSC play, the Mocs, who are ranked sixth in the latest IWLCA Division II Coaches' Poll and have won nine straight games since falling 10-9 in Bradenton, Fla., to Hamilton, also picked up league wins at home against Tampa (18-7) and Saint Leo (15-2) and at Florida Tech (16-4).
Rollins, who is sporting a 13-2 overall record, is the No. 2 seed in this year's SSC Tournament after finishing second in the league with a 3-1 record for the second consecutive year. The Tars, who are ranked third in the most recent IWLCA Division II Coaches' Poll, picked up league wins at Tampa (13-6) and at Florida Tech (14-10) and a home victory over Saint Leo (14-7). Prior to its loss to the Mocs this past Thursday, Rollins had reeled off four straight wins since an 8-6 loss at then 13th-ranked Limestone.
Florida Tech earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament following its 13-3 win on Saturday at Saint Leo to close out the regular season. The Panthers, who are 10-6 overall and 2-2 in the SSC, picked up league wins at Saint Leo and at Tampa (9-6), but lost at home to FSC (16-4) and Rollins (14-10) during the regular season.
Tampa is the No. 4 seed thanks by virtue of its win 8-7 overtime win at Saint Leo on April 16. That was the Spartans' lone win in SSC play as they went 1-3 and are sporting a 5-9 overall record. In fact, the win this season at Saint Leo was the first ever in SSC play by the Spartans as they went 0-4 during the inaugural season of SSC play in 2015.
At last year's inaugural SSC Tournament in Lakeland, Rollins took home the championship with 12-10 overtime victory against the Mocs. The Mocs earned a spot in the championship game with a 19-9 win over Florida Tech, while Rollins earned a 15-3 win over Saint Leo.
