Florida Southern Earns Split in Portland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PORTLAND, OR – Florida Southern College volleyball split its final two matches of the Concordia Labor Day Tournament on Friday at LCEF Court. The No. 15 Moccasins (3-1) fell in five sets to Metro State in their first contest of the day, but bounced back to pick up a 3-0 win over Missouri S&T to cap off their West Coast trip.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST METRO STATE
• The Mocs jumped out to an early 5-3 lead in the first set, but the Roadrunners scored eight-straight points to take an 11-5 lead. Metro State would push its lead to as many as eight points on two occasions and would go on to earn a 25-19 first-set victory.
• The Roadrunners raced out to seven point lead (11-4) early in the second set, but Florida Southern reeled off an 8-1 run to tie the set at 12-12. A 6-1 run later in the set would give the Mocs some breathing room at 23-19, but Metro State was able to battle back before committing a costly service error that gave Florida Southern a 25-23 second-set win.
• FSC grabbed a 3-0 lead in the third set, but Metro State battled back to make it 5-5 just moments later. Neither team would lead by more than two points until the very end, when the Roadrunners scored four-straight points to slip by Florida Southern for a 25-22 win in the third set.
• With their backs to the wall, the Mocs put together a dominant effort in the fourth set, leading the entire time en route to a 25-10 set victory to tie the match at 2-2. Florida Southern scored 12 of the final 14 points in the set, including six-straight to close things out.
• The decisive fifth set was close throughout as FSC built a 7-5 lead, but a 3-0 run by Metro State would give it an 8-5 edge. The Roadrunners would never give back the lead and scored five of the final six points to earn a 15-11 set win and take the match by a 3-2 final.

HOW IT HAPPENED AGAINST MISSOURI S&T
• Florida Southern fell behind early and trailed by as many as seven points (20-13) in the first set. Despite the deficit the Mocs were able to reel off a 5-0 run to pull within two points, and ultimately completed the comeback on a pair of ball handling errors by Missouri S&T to take a 25-23 first-set victory.
• Tied at 10-10 in the second set, FSC reeled off an 8-2 run to take a commanding 18-12 lead, but a quick 4-1 run by the Miners made it 19-16 and forced a Florida Southern timeout. The Mocs regrouped after the break and responded with three-straight points to gain some breathing room en route to a 25-19 second-set win.
• Neither team was really able to gain separation in the third set until Florida Southern grabbed a four point lead (21-17) late in the set. Missouri S&T scored three points in a row to make it 21-20, but the Mocs scored four of the next five points to earn a 3-0 victory.
