Box Score LAKELAND, Fla. - Florida Southern College volleyball picked up its 12th-straight home victory as it cruised to an easy 3-1 win over Barry on Friday at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins (10-3, 4-1 SSC) dropped the first set to the Buccaneers (8-4, 2-2) but rebounded to win three sets in a row and keep pace atop the Sunshine State Conference standings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
• Barry got off to a fast start as it raced out to a 7-3 lead in the first set. The Buccaneers would maintain the lead until late in the set, when a 4-0 run by the Mocs tied things at 20-20. The Bucs regained momentum with a 4-0 run of their own en route to a 25-22 set win and a 1-0 match lead.
• Florida Southern came out on fire in the second by building a 5-1 lead. The Moccasins hit an incredible .448 in the second set and led by as many as 10 points (20-10) late in the set before rolling to a 25-12 second-set win.
• The third set featured a highly competitive back-and-forth contest that saw eight ties and four lead changes. Florida Southern jumped out to an 8-2 lead and looked like it might roll to another set victory, but the Bucs rallied back to grab an 11-10 lead midway through and led by two points (17-15) late in the set. FSC would go on a 7-1 run to make it 22-18 and Barry would never recover as the Mocs earned a 25-20 victory.
• Florida Southern dominated the final set, jumping on top of the Buccaneers 4-0 en route to a 25-15 set win. The Mocs were never in danger as they saw their lead swell to 10 points (22-12) late in the set. Jessica Sullivan scored the last two points for FSC to send her squad to a 25-15 third-set win and a 3-1 victory.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
• Friday's win was Florida Southern's 12th-straight home victory overall and its 12th-straight home win in the series with Barry. The Mocs are now 6-0 at home this season and 481-118 all-time at Jenkins Field House. The Moccasins improved to 37-32 all-time against Barry, including a 21-10 mark at home.
• Brindl Langley finished with 21 digs on the night to push her career total to 1,540. She needs 93 more to pass Daryl Bâby (1,632) for fourth all-time and 275 to pass Sara Stewart (1,814) for the school record.
• Anna Tovo had a match-high 18 kills against Barry. She has recorded double-digit kills in 26 consecutive matches dating back to last year. Nicole Mattson had 17 kills of her own. Mattson has recorded at least 15 kills in four of the team's last six matches.
• Allie Geary finished with seven block assists. She has recorded at least six total blocks in five matches this year and has 18 over her past three matches.
UP NEXT
• Florida Southern will finish off a three-match homestand when it hosts Lynn at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Mocs will then play Rollins (Oct. 7) and Embry-Riddle (Oct. 8) on the road before participating in the SSC/GSC Crossover in Orlando from Oct. 14-15.
