LAKELAND – The 15th ranked Florida Southern women's tennis team posted an 8-1 win over visiting West Virginia State University here Monday at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center. The win moves the Moccasins to 8-4 on the season while the Yellow Jackets slip to 10-2.
Florida Southern's number one doubles team of Lorena Rionda and Selin Devrimci set the tone for the match with an 8-2 upset of the 25th-ranked duo of Kierstin Hensley and Nina Dillwald. Magda Stepnik and Nina Schwab then disposed of Laura Isbey and Kayla McKnight, 8-3, at number two while Lola Asis and Gabby Hesse breezed to an 8-1 win over Hanna Kontravaga and Nika Tadic as the Mocs swept the doubles competition.
Schwab kept the momentum going for the Mocs with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Graziele Preterotto at number six singles while Stepnik blanked Sydney Miller, 6-0, 6-0 at number five.
At number one, Rionda downed Isbey, 6-4, 6-3 while Hensley picked up the only score for West Virginia State with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Devrimci. Asis set aside Dillwald, 6-2, 6-1 at number three while Popovic edged McKnight, 6-4, 6-2 at number four.
Florida Southern will take on Denison, which is ranked 35th in the NCAA Division III, on Thursday, March 22 at 3 p.m. at the Wynee Warden Tennis Center.
